GAZA: With the opening of the Rafah border, the only crossing point between Egypt and Gaza, the first trucks with essential medicines have arrived in Gaza. 20 trucks were allowed to proceed to Gaza. Trucks carrying humanitarian aid will only be allowed into southern Gaza, Israeli forces said.
Trucks will be barred from crossing into northern Gaza. Only essential medicines are currently being delivered to Gaza. Israel has not given permission to deliver fuel. Michael Ryan, WHO's director of emergency services, said earlier that Gaza needed at least 2,000 truckloads of essential supplies. At the same time, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the medical supplies being delivered to Gaza will not be enough. He responded that 20 truckloads of aid would not amount to anything in Gaza, home to 23 lakh people.
The government of Israel gave permission to bring aid to Gaza after talks with the UN, Egypt, and the US. According to the agreement, the goods will be delivered from the Red Crescent in Egypt to the Palestine Red Crescent Organization. The Israeli government has demanded evidence to prove that the supplies from Egypt were not intercepted or diverted by Hamas.
Gaza has been under total siege for eleven days as Israel continues its offensive against Hamas. Water, electricity, fuel etc. have been banned. Food items are not available in shops. The toilets were destroyed during the war. Most of the hospitals are running with the help of generators as the power supply has been completely stopped. There is also a threat of infectious diseases due to a lack of access to clean water.
