VIZHINJAM: The Fire Force miraculously rescued a 12-year-old girl who accidentally fell into a 50-foot-deep well while playing. Anamika (12), the daughter of Venganoor Kalluvettankuzhy native Sunitha, fell into the well while playing. A tragedy was averted, thanks to Anamika's mental strength and the Fire Force's sense of duty.

The incident happened at 12.55 p.m. on Saturday. The girl was playing sitting on the wire netting above the wall of the well near the establishment run by her mother near Kalluvettankuzhy. Locals said that the girl fell into the well after the wire netting entirely snapped. While falling, Anamika hung on to the rope of the pump set installed in the well. She hung onto the rope for half an hour until the Fire Force arrived and rescued her. The water in the well was up to the girl's neck when the Fire Force team reached the spot.

It was the locals who informed the Fire Force and the police after hearing the loud cry of Anamika's mother. There was about 25 feet of water in the well, which was closed with more than half of the upper part concreted. Fireman G Rajeev got down into the well with an oxygen cylinder, put the girl in a net and brought her outside. The girl was then rushed to the social health centre in Vizhinjam and given first aid. The child had no other injuries. The rescue operation was carried out by a team consisting of RG Shiju, S. Pradeep Kumar, Anuraj and Rajesh Kumar under the leadership of Station Officer TK Ajaya. Vizhinjam police also reached the spot. The Fire Force directed the house owner to raise the height of the handrail of the well and install a strong wire fence.
