NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has taken tough measures in India-Canada relations. Jaishankar stated that Canada has interfered in India's internal affairs and many details about the matter have not yet been disclosed. He also informed that the visa service for Canadian citizens cannot be started for the time being. The service was stopped due to security threats to Indian officials. The minister also said that the issuing of visas will be restored if the situation improves.

Canada has already withdrawn 41 diplomats from India. This is the first time that S Jaishankar has taken such a tough stand since the India-Canada dispute started. India had earlier proposed to cut down Canada's diplomatic staff. The United States and Britain responded that it was a violation of the Vienna Convention. The foreign minister's reaction came after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticized India yesterday in the face of American support. Jayashankar's position is that he does not care about this pressure.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries exploded after Canada accused India of being involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. First, both countries expelled each other's diplomats. Later, India requested the withdrawal of 41 personnel citing that there were too many of them in numbers.
