NEW DELHI: The air quality index in Delhi continue to be in the poor category as it has crossed 300 in many sectors. The problem worsened after burning of agricultural residues in the neighbouring states and bursting of firecrackers during festivals. The air quality index was recorded at 335 in the Delhi University area and 313 in the vicinity of the international airport. Meanwhile, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai has written to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, pointing out that officials are not attending the meeting convened by the Delhi government for a solution. This is in the midst of a dispute between the central and Delhi governments, including on the appointment of officials. Meanwhile, the BJP mocked the Kejriwal government for turning Delhi into a gas chamber.
Public should cooperate
Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that the public should also cooperate to solve the pollution problem. The minister's request comes with Diwali in the horizon. The Aam Aadmi government has imposed a complete ban on bursting firecrackers in Delhi. A second phase action plan to improve air quality will be implemented. He said that the government's effort for a better environment requires the cooperation of the people.
