KOCHI: Zamra Convention Centre in Kalamassery became the focal point of discussion across the country on Sunday. Three bombs denoted in seconds difference inside the convention centre where a mass prayer of the Jehovah's Witnesses was going on. Two women were killed in the ghastly attack. Thodupuzha native Kumari(53) and Kuruppampady native Leona Paulose(60) are the deceased. More than 52 people were badly injured in the explosion, and among these, 18 are in ICU.
Adding more drama, by Sunday noon, Dominic Martin a native of Thammanam surrendered at the Thrissur Kodakara police station claiming to have planted the bomb in the convention centre. He admitted to being a believer in Jehovah's Witnesses. Martin's testimony came through his Facebook page and he later surrendered. The remote control used to detonate the bomb was handed over to the police. Dominic also shot the event on his phone and exchanged the video footage of the event with the police to end all suspicion. Police later confirmed that it was indeed Dominic who planted the bomb in the convention centre as the evidence was shockingly real.
An FIR was also registered against Leona Paulose, the first woman killed in the blast. The incident sent shock waves across the nation and it even forced the NIA team to hurry to Kochi to take over the case. Central agencies are also working in tandem with the state police to unearth the real mystery behind the terrorist act.
The central government alerted the entire nation and asked forces to beef up security in the wake of the Kalamassery bomb blast. CM Pinarayi Vijayan who was in Delhi at the time of the incident returned to Kerala by Sunday evening. On Monday, a high-profile meeting will take place under the aegis of the chief minister.
It is also reported that a child with 80 per cent burns is on a ventilator. The blast took place at the Zamra International Convention Center near the Medical College in Kalamassery. Today was the last day of the conference which has been going on since 27th of this month. It is reported that more than 2,000 people participated in the convention. The injured were shifted to different hospitals.
Police might have the relief of arresting Dominic with ease, but there are still many mysteries shrouded in the case that need attention. According to Dominic, the Jehovah's Witnesses group were constantly involved in Anti-national activists and was not ready to change albeit being pleaded by many. Dominic says he never intended to kill anyone but just wanted to create a ruckus.
Dominic, who worked abroad, arrived in the country two months ago. Police are also looking for more culprits who may have helped Dominic acquire the IED bombs. Dominic left home early morning at 5 am and told his wife that he would return soon. Dominic Martin was currently staying at a rental house in Thammanam. By noon, his wife Minis’s mobile received a shocking message from Dominic. It read “ I am behind Kalamassery bomb blast. There is nothing to fear”
“ For long 16 years, I have been a believer of Jehovah's Witnesses. But recently, I have found that their ideology is dangerous as they promote anti-nationalism and ask people to not link up with others in the country. I tried to correct them several times, but they refused to change. The believers are even injecting the same poison into their children asking them not to vote, not to join the military and never support anything for this country” as said by Dominic on his Facebook page.
