If Dominic Martin had not travelled 45 kilometres from Kalamassery to surrender at Kodakara police station, Kerala would have still remained at a standstill with no proper clue about the series of Bomb blasts that took place inside a convention of Jehovah's Witnesses in Kalamassery.
With his horrendous admission, Kerala came out of the limbo, but there are many questions that still deserve more lucid answers. Dominic says he was motivated to commit such a heinous crime just for the fact that the organisation harboured anti-national sentiments. At first, police took him into custody but were reluctant to buy his story of the blast. But after some hours of questioning, the officials were stunned as Dominic showed them the mobile footage version he had taken while the blast happened. The evidence was shockingly real and this time, the police forces were never in doubt. Three people including a 13-year-old girl lost her life in the terrorist act.
But even then, the mysteries created by this incident, which shocked the state and the country itself, remain almost the same. The investigation will achieve its real purpose only when the people of the state are convinced by the findings. The central agencies are also working in tandem with state police officials to unearth it. Chief minister of Kerala in a press conference on Sunday announced that an ADGP-led team will investigate the Kalamassery bomb blast case. A team of 21 members has been appointed under the leadership of Ajith Kumar.
Doubts still remain about Dominic seeking help from someone else to hatch the plan. It seems impossible for a middle-aged man alone to deftly create such a plan with precision that also includes detonating an IED bomb through remote control technology. It is also assumed that much of the revelations made by Dominic to the police are laced with incredulity.
Political infighting and assassinations have taken place in the state but planned bombings are a new low in Kerala. A former supporter and activist of the Jehovah's Witness movement, the defendant, who showed up to detonate bombs at a convention attended by about 2,500 believers, is a shocking development considering Kerala’s aversion to such crimes. It would not be right to see this cruel, diabolical and inhuman act as merely the creation of a depraved mind.
Dominic revealed to police that he learned to make IED bombs through YouTube videos. He even denied getting aid from others to work out the plan. Even after such revelations, the dots are still not connecting perfectly.
Innocent people are often victims of attacks by anti-social elements. Attacks targeting places of worship are common across the world but not in Kerala. The state is often touted for its tranquillity and acceptance. Dominic Martin’s testimony not only saved the police forces but also helped the state not fall for the vile propaganda of communalism that was beginning to spread.
The Kalamassery bomb blast is a lesson for the state. Any gathering with more than 500 people should adhere to proper security measures. Anti-scoials are in every crowd and they may chance upon any event to wreak havoc. The innocents will bear the plight of their heinous actions.
The political elites often gloat about Kerala's prowess in everything. The Kalamassery bomb blast is a blot on their condescending bragging and it also evokes the need to ensure strict security measures across the state.
The government should come forward to provide assistance to the kin of the dead and the injured. At the same time, the government should ensure that conventions like this should be held only with adequate security arrangements. For this, opinions of political parties, religious and caste organizations and the public can be taken.
