NEW DELHI: India's Foreign Minister, S Jaishankar, has vowed to continue efforts to secure the release of eight former Indian naval personnel who have been sentenced to death in Qatar. Among them is Rajesh Gopakumar, hailing from Thiruvananthapuram. The minister made this commitment during a meeting with the family members of these individuals, and he shared the details of the meeting through his social media channels.
Jaishankar assured that the Indian government places high importance on this case and is actively addressing the concerns and suffering of the affected families.
The eight individuals have been convicted of alleged espionage for Israel while working at a private company that provides training to the Qatari armed forces. The matter will be discussed with Qatari authorities, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also actively seeking ways to facilitate a favourable resolution through discussions with the Emir of Qatar.
The sentenced individuals include Sailor Rajesh, Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vashisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, and Commander Sanjeev Gupta.
