NEW DELHI: Opposition party MPs, including Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra and BSP MP Danish Ali, left the Parliamentary Ethics Committee meeting today. Moitra who was called before the committee regarding allegations of accepting money to ask questions in Parliament left the meeting, stating that the ethics committee had posed inappropriate questions.

Congress MP and committee member N Utham Kumar Reddy informed the media that he too exited the meeting because he believed the questions from the ethics committee chairperson to Moitra were disrespectful and unethical. Moitra affirmed her innocence regarding the allegations during the committee's inquiry.

The ethics committee questioned the MP based on documents and evidence gathered from three central ministries: the Ministry of Home Affairs, Information Technology, and the Ministry of External Affairs. The committee also probed whether the IP addresses of the logins matched the locations.

This investigation stems from a complaint filed by BJP leader Nishikant Dubey accusing Moitra of receiving money from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for raising questions in Parliament aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Adani Group. Dubey also urged Speaker Om Birla to suspend the MP from Parliament. The committee had previously questioned Dubey and Supreme Court lawyer Jai Dehadrai who had made allegations against Moitra.

The MP had earlier argued that the ethics committee lacked the authority to investigate such claims. Moitra also requested the committee to permit Hiranandani to cross-examine her.
