LISBON: There are many translation apps, both free and paid, that will help you handle all languages in the world effortlessly. Those who depend on such apps, beware. These may be helpful, but sometimes they can also cause you great harm. Just the other day, a young man had a bad experience using such an app. The man had ordered pomegranate juice with the help of a translation app but instead of the juice, it was the police who reached his table.
The 36-year-old Russian citizen wanted to order pomegranate juice from a restaurant in Lisbon, Portugal. Not knowing the language, he checked the name of the juice with the help of a translation app and ordered it. When the man checked the name of pomegranate fruit in Portuguese, the app gave the word 'grenade' as the translation instead. Thinking it was the right word, the man wrote the name on a tissue paper and gave it to the restaurant employee. Instead of the restaurant waiter, it was the police who reached the man who was thirsty and was waiting for the juice.
The video of him being caught by the police is widely circulating on social media. In the footage, officers with guns drawn surround the man and he falls to the ground and surrenders, unaware of what is happening. The video also shows five police officers arresting him and taking him away. After a thorough investigation, the police confirmed that the man was not a threat and was not in possession of any weapons. During the interrogation, the police searched his hotel room but found nothing suspicious. He was then released after Lisbon police checked their database and consulted with the country's counter-terrorism unit.
