THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The people of Kerala, who are facing hardship due to the recent price hike, have received yet another blow. The state has hiked electricity rates. The rate will go up by an average of up to 20 pesa per unit. The rate hike is not applicable to those who use less than 40 units per month. There will be a 20 percent rate hike for those using 100 units. The Electricity Regulatory Commission rate hike came into effect from yesterday.

Earlier, KSEB had asked the Electricity Regulatory Commission to increase the tariff by 25 to 40 percent. Now, a maximum hike of 20 percent has been announced. The electricity tariff was last hiked in Kerala in June 2022. The rate hike is not applicable to orphanages, old age homes, IT and IT-related institutions.

Meanwhile, opposition leader VD Satheesan came out against the hike in electricity tariff. He said that by increasing the electricity tariff, the government is challenging the common sense of the people.
