MUMBAI: Mohammed Shami now holds a record that no other Indian bowler in the history of ODI World Cup has ever had. With five wickets in today's match against Sri Lanka, he became the highest wicket-taker for India in the ODI World Cup. Shami broke the record of 44 wickets held by Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan. Shami took 45 wickets for India in World Cup matches alone. Shami took only 14 matches to achieve this feat. Zaheer Khan took 44 wickets in 23 World Cup matches and Srinath in 34 matches.
Shami took five wickets against Sri Lanka in just five overs conceding only 18 runs. With this, he became the first Indian bowler to take three five-wicket hauls in the World Cup. Kapil Dev, Venkatesh Prasad, Robin Singh, Ashish Nehra and Yuvraj Singh had taken five wickets each for India in World Cups. This record was earlier surpassed by Shami with a five-wicket haul in the match against New Zealand.

Shami also reached the record of Australia's Mitchell Starc, who took five wickets the most times in the World Cup. Both have taken five wickets three times each. Shami also came third behind Mitchell Starc among those who took four or more wickets. Starc took four or more wickets six times in 22 innings. Shami took four or more wickets six times in 14 innings. No other Indian bowler has taken four or more wickets more than twice.

With today's performance, Shami moved up to eighth in the list of wicket-takers in the World Cup. Glenn McGrath tops the list with 71 wickets from 39 matches. Muttiah Muralitharan is second with 68 wickets and Australia's Mitchell Starc is third with 56 wickets.
