A Supreme Court judge has urged lawyers to avoid addressing him as 'My Lord.' Justice PS Narasimha expressed his disapproval of the terms 'My Lord' and 'Your Lordship.' During a case hearing with Justice AS Bopanna, Justice Narasimha questioned the frequent use of 'My Lords' and offered to forfeit half of his salary if this practice ceased. He suggested the use of 'Sir' instead and even proposed that a senior advocate keep track of how many times 'My Lords' were used.

In legal proceedings, lawyers commonly use terms like 'My Lord' or 'Your Lordships' when addressing judges. However, critics argue that these phrases hark back to a colonial-era mindset. In 2006, the Bar Council of India attempted to prohibit the use of 'My Lord' and 'Your Lordship' but this proved challenging to enforce.
