NEW DELHI: Air pollution remains severe in Delhi, where the Air Quality Index (AQI) remains above 400. For the second day in a row, smoke and snow covered Delhi and surrounding areas, blocking the sun. School holidays may continue.
According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, AQI was recorded at 400-500 points in many places. The ban on construction activities and diesel vehicles will continue due to air pollution. The holiday given to schools on Friday and Saturday may be extended from tomorrow.
Government agencies have warned that pollution levels in the Delhi-National Capital Region will worsen in the coming days. The pollution is exacerbated by smog from the burning of agricultural residues from Punjab and Haryana in windless conditions.
Threat of respiratory diseases
Dr Randeep Guleria, former head of Delhi AIIMS, said that the air quality is very poor and affects the health of the people. Inhaling toxic fumes containing sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone and particulate matter can affect the body.
