THRISSUR: Clash in Viyyur High Security Prison. Prisoners led by Kodi Suni, an accused in the TP Chandrasekaran murder case, attacked the prison staff. Three prison staff and one suspect were injured in the attack with weapons. Asst. Prison officer Arjundas fractured his shoulder. Deputy Superintendent Sriraman, Prison Officer Vijayakumar, Deputy Prison Officer Omprakash and an inmate were injured in the attack.
Officials informed that they have been admitted to the hospital.
Two inmates had demanded more mutton during the officials' morning visit to the jail. The conflict started when officials said that they cannot give more mutton than the specified quantity. Then the prisoners asked for a shaving blade. After being told that that too is not allowed under the Jail rules, an attempt was made to assault the officers. With this, a prisoner broke the drinking glass and tried to stab Assistant Prison Officer Arjundas in the neck. Other officers were also beaten up when they tried to stop him. Then a group of prisoners went to the kitchen and beat up the prisoner who was helping in cooking. From there, they entered the office and smashed the telephone used by the prisoners to call home. Everything in sight including the chair, clock, files and intercom was destroyed. The gate from inside the prison to the compound wall was pushed open. By that time, officials from other prisons had arrived and announced through the microphone that the prisoners should enter the cells.
Kodi Suni and his gang did not enter the cell even though the accused in the Periya case, Maoist prisoners, PFI and ISIS prisoners entered the cell. Violent prisoners who did not go in were forcibly subdued and put in cells. According to officials, the prisoners were supported by Suni for all the attacks. Viyur police registered a case against the prisoners involved in the attack.
The maximum security prison was built to house NIA prisoners. However, it is alleged that the lack of clarity about who can be kept in high-security prisons and how to maintain discipline often helps the prisoners.
