KOCHI: In a tragic turn of events, another person who was under treatment for severe injuries sustained in the Kalamassery blast has died, bringing the death toll to four. The latest victim, Molly (61) from Kalamassery, had been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Ernakulam for extensive burns amounting to 80 per cent of her body. The previous fatalities included Leona Paulose from Iringhol Vattapady, Kumari from Thodupuzha Kaliyar, and Libina (12) from Kalady.
The explosion left 52 individuals injured, with seven of them in serious condition. As of now, six patients with injuries exceeding 50 per cent are still under medical care. The Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court is set to consider the police's request to remand the accused, Dominic Martin, into custody today. A seven-day custody period is being sought, with the focus of the investigation centred on Martin.
There are suspicions that individuals who had disassociated from the Jehovah's Witnesses organization may have played a role in the incident, adding another layer to the ongoing investigation. Authorities are also examining Martin's wife's statement that she received a mysterious phone call on the night before the blast. While the identification parade of the accused has been completed, the collection of additional evidence remains ongoing. Preliminary evidence was gathered from Martin's flat in Nedumbassery, where he had assembled the explosive device.
