THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: From December 1, vehicles that do not pay fines for traffic violations will be denied pollution tests. The decision was taken in the AI camera review meeting chaired by Minister Antony Raju on Monday. The meeting assessed that the road accident death rate has decreased in the five months since the cameras were installed. From June 2023 to October end, 1263 people died in road accidents.
In 2022, there were 1669 deaths during the same period. In 2023 September, 273 people died in road accidents while in September 2022, it was 365.
From June 5 to October, a total of 74.32 lakh violations were detected. From this, 58.29 lakh cases were verified and 23.06 lakh cases were transferred to software. From this, 21.03 lakh e-challans were prepared. It has violations punishable with a fine of over Rs 139 crore. From this, Rs 21.5 crore fine has reached the department.
In October, 13 vehicles belonging to MPs and MLAs were fined. On November 15th, a discussion will be held in Thiruvananthapuram with the company heads to impose an additional amount on those who violate the law. A provision is also under discussion to make violators pay the fine before renewing the insurance.
