THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPM, which believes that Palestine solidarity helped in changing the mind of the Muslim League, is now making moves to woo those Congress leaders who are dissatisfied with the party leadership. As a part of this move, the CPM extended public support for Aryadan Shaukath, who is facing disciplinary action for holding a Palestinian rally in defiance of the leadership. AK Balan publicly said that CPM and Left Front will protect Shaukath if the Congress leadership takes action against him.
CPM is trying to attract some of the prominent leaders from the Congress camp who are dissatisfied with the party reorganization. Shaukath, a prominent member of A group in Malappuram district, has been fighting with the KPCC leadership since the election of the mandalam president. According to sources, CPM will make Shaukath as the Left independent candidate in the Ponnani Lok Sabha constituency if he leaves the Congress.
The CPM thinks that the frictions caused within the Congress in the district-level joint meetings conducted by KPCC President K Sudhakaran and Opposition Leader VD Satheesan have created a favourable atmosphere. The lack of coordination of the Congress state leadership has affected the organization from the grassroots level. Congress workers are complaining that even when serious allegations are raised against the government, the opposition is not using those allegations as an opportunity for strong protests.
The League has warned that the Congress will face a huge setback if it turns against Shaukath on the Palestine issue. League has suggested is to resolve the issue amicably as soon as possible. The League had earlier found itself on the defensive following Shashi Tharoor's anti-Hamas campaign. They are also dissatisfied with K Sudhakaran's response.
Meanwhile, RSP, another prominent constituent party in the UDF, pointed out that the UDF's image as a cold opposition will adversely affect the front. RSP leader Shibu Baby John alleged that it has been a long time since the opposition successfully took up the struggles against the government. Some leaders are worried that if this is the case, the UDF may remain in the opposition for the third time in the 2026 elections. Recognizing this discomfort within the UDF, the CPM is energizing its move ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
