ALAPPUZHA: Kerala's police force is facing a severe shortage of armourers, with just 166 officers tasked with maintaining and inspecting a staggering 52,649 firearms, which include a wide range of weapons, from outdated TMC 45s to modern AK-47s and sniper rifles. This situation is causing concerns about the proper maintenance and safety of these firearms.
Over the last decade and a half, the number of firearms in the police force has increased significantly, but the number of armourers has not kept pace. The responsibilities of armourers include the maintenance, inspection, and training of police personnel in the use of firearms.
At present, the armour units are unable to fulfil these responsibilities adequately due to their limited numbers, which compromises the safety and functionality of the weapons. In addition to regular maintenance, armourers are responsible for ensuring that firearms are in good working order, and they should provide training to police officers in their proper use.
Unfortunately, the Thrissur Police Academy has only one head constable responsible for maintaining and training officers in the use of firearms, in addition to repairing 3525 firearms. This glaring shortage of armourers is a significant concern as it hampers the maintenance and safety of firearms.
In 1992, the Armor Division was placed under the leadership of a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), but no additional posts have been created to accommodate the growing workload. A recommendation for more posts was submitted during the previous government's tenure; however, it was opposed by the finance department and ultimately not approved.
It is crucial for police stations and battalions to receive regular armour checks, with Armor Sub-Inspectors examined every three months, Circle Inspectors every six months, and Deputy Superintendents once a year. Regular inspections are necessary to ensure the functionality, safety, and maintenance of the firearms.
In addition, police station personnel should receive annual training in firearm use and major maintenance should be performed as needed. The coordination of Armor Pavilions, including participating in government events, should also be carried out, along with raising awareness about the importance of proper firearm maintenance and safety.
