silverline

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state is resuming the frozen Silver Line project, which was frozen following intense protests. Indications are that the project is being considered by the Centre. The Railway Board has directed the general manager of Southern Railway to immediately hold discussions with K-Rail Corporation and give a detailed opinion regarding the acquisition of railway land. This is due to the pressure of the state.

Board Director FA Ahmed's letter said that the matter should be considered with urgency. After getting the reply, the Ministry of Railways will present its position in the parliamentary committee which will meet soon. 'Kerala Kaumudi' had reported that the state has intensified pressure on the Centre for approval of the project.

On October 21, the Southern Railway had informed the board about the acquisition of railway land, buildings and crossings. The board has directed to give a detailed opinion soon after discussing with K-Rail on the related issues. In a letter sent to the Southern Railway on October 18, the board had suggested holding talks with K-Rail, but that did not happen. The new proposal comes after K-Rail sent a report without comment.

108 hectares of railway land in 9 districts is to be acquired. This information given by K-Rail a year ago was not sent by Southern Railway to Railway Board. The state government is pressing for a joint survey of the railway land. Kerala's special representative in Delhi, KV Thomas, is leading the talks.

Strike committee to stage agitation

Thee strike committee will start a strong strike again if the project is implemented. "The Southern Railway should inform the board that this project is a hindrance to future railway development. This is a project that Kerala cannot afford. The scheme should be withdrawn without further wasteful expenditure", the committee says.

Expenditure so far on SilverLine: Rs 57.84 crores
