KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has allowed two serving life imprisonment in the murder case to study LLB online. The order was passed by the division bench led by Justice A K Jayasankaran Nambiar and Justice Kauser Edappagath. The court pointed that they also have the right to live with pride even if undergoing jail term.
Education is essential to the transformation intended by imprisonment. Education can make prisoners feel part of the society. This will also pave the way for effective utilization of the time spent in prison. The court also pointed out that education will help them lead a better life after their release.
Suresh Babu of Kannur Cheemeni Open Jail and V Vinoy of Kannur Central Jail approached the court requesting to suspend their sentence for studies. Both had cleared the LLB entrance exam for the academic year 2023-24. Suresh Babu got admission in Malappuram KMCT Law College for a three-year course and Vinoy in Poothotta Sree Narayana Law College for a five-year course.
The court had directed their relatives to pay the fees and complete the admission procedures with necessary certificates. As per that the admission procedures were completed. However, advocates of Calicut University and M G University, opposed the demand for online learning. They pointed out that there is a ban for online LLB courses. The principals of both the colleges have taken the stand that they are ready to provide online admission if there is a court order.
