NEW DELHI: The Ethics Committee on Thursday recommended the expulsion of Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra from the Lok Sabha over allegations that she took money to ask questions in Parliament and gave the login ID and password of her Parliament account to a private person.
The committee report will be handed over to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday. The move is to introduce a motion in the parliamentary session that begins at the end of this month, and Mahua will be shown the door as the government still holds a fair majority in Lok Sabha. If expelled, TMC MP Mahua Moitra can approach the court.
According to the ethics committee report, Mahua's actions are objectionable, heinous and criminal. The report was passed by a vote after opposition MPs went against Moitra’s expulsion. They have written a memorandum of disagreement. Congress MP Preneet Kaur, wife of former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder, was among the six members who supported the expulsion of Moitra. Preneet has been at odds with the Congress party and is pretty unsure about getting a ticket from Patiala Urban again.
Mahua's Parliamentary account for the period 2013 – 2019 was operated 47 times from UAE, found the union IT ministry. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress has decided to back Mahua albeit many reports emerging about discord brewing between Mahua and TMC numero uno Mamata Banerjee. Party leader Abhishek Banerjee said Mahua is capable of handling the allegations on her own.
