NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court rapped the governors for delaying action on the bills passed by the assembly. The bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud harshly criticized the governors of Punjab and Tamil Nadu. The court directed the governors not to delay in taking decisions on the bills.

‘Please don’t deflect the course of the bills passed by the assembly. It is a very serious matter. You are playing with fire. We are not happy with what is happening in Punjab. Will we continue to be a parliamentary democracy? India is a country that follows established traditions and conventions. It has to be followed like that,' the court clarified.

The plea filed by the Punjab government in the Supreme Court against Governor Banwarilal Purohit, alleged that the unconstitutional inaction has brought the entire administration to a standstill. Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for the Punjab government, told the court that seven bills related to financial management and education have been stayed by the governor. Singhvi told the court that the bills were sent last July for the Governor's approval and his inaction has affected the administration.
The Stalin Government filed a plea in the court against Governor R L Ravi, alleging that a person with constitutional authority is acting unconstitutionally in a manner that obstructs the activities of the state government. The plea also demanded the Supreme Court to intervene in the matter.

Meantime, the Kerala government filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court against Governor Arif Mohammad Khan. This is the second plea to be filed within a week. The demand is to make the governor a party.

The special permission plea has been filed by the state chief secretary and state law secretary. The plea of the state government also said that delaying the decision on the bills is a grave injustice done by the governor to the people and the members of the assembly.
