DEHRADUN: Recent reports are claiming that the Uttarakhand government will soon convene a special session of the Legislative Assembly to introduce the Uniform Civil Code draft. The draft was prepared by a committee formed by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

The committee prepared the draft after talking to more than two lakh people from various corners of the society. The purpose of the Uniform Civil Code is to introduce general laws that are not based on religion on personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption.

Sources said the government seeks a complete ban on polygamy in the draft bill to be presented in the Uttarakhand assembly. It is learned that there is also a provision for live-in partners to register their relationship.

If the bill gets passed, the son and daughter will get equal rights in property etc. The Uniform Civil Code was one of the major promises made by the BJP in the state assembly elections held last year. On the very first cabinet meeting after coming to power for the second consecutive term, Dhami had given his go-ahead to form a committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai to prepare the draft of the UCC.
