Actor Kalabhavan Mani died in March 2016. The actor found unconscious in Paadi, the outhouse of Mani, near his house was rushed to the hospital, but his life could not be saved. The post-mortem report mentioned traces of poison in Mani's body. Following that, his relatives and fans came forward alleging mystery in his death. Even the CBI investigated the case.

The main question surrounding the death was how the poison got into Mani's body. Now, in an interview given to a media, P N Unnirajan IPS, who was part of the team investigating the case, revealed the truth behind Kalabhavan Mani's death.

Unnirajan IPS said that he had gone to Paadi several times and inspected in detail the things recovered from its premises. ‘A detailed statement was taken from Jafar Idukki and Tharikida Sabu, who came there the day before Mani's death. Mani's blood test report showed traces of methyl alcohol. Usually, a trace of ethyl alcohol will be there when consuming liquor. Methyl alcohol is usually found in paint remover and other things and it is called surgical spirit.

If the content of methyl alcohol is more than 30 mg per 100 ml of blood, it is dangerous. Many things are added when arrack is brewed. It may sometimes contain the presence of methyl alcohol. There were traces of some pesticides in Mani’s blood. Investigated how methyl alcohol and pesticide reached his blood.

The IPS officer said that he had enquired whether Mani had drunk arrack while on a tour or whether any of his friends had given him that. However, did not get any information on that. Mani used to eat a lot of raw vegetables. It is being actively investigated whether the pesticide reached his body through the vegetables. There is no evidence of him consuming meat or arrack on the day of the incident. He used to consume only beer that time.

Mani was a chronic diabetic patient. He used to take medicines. The doctor had prescribed the medicine four or five years ago. He used it continuously. He did not go to see the doctor. Should not consume liquor with this medicine. If that happens, there will be a chemical reaction between them and it will affect one’s health. Mani was getting physically weak. As his health deteriorated, he used to wear one or two sweater-like banyans under his shirt. He did not tell this to anybody.

Mani used to drink twelve to thirteen bottles of beer every day. All the bottles of beer consumed were collected and sent for chemical analysis. In this result, a small amount of methyl alcohol was found in the beer. After that, the medical board in Thiruvananthapuram discussed in detail why the death happened.

Mani, who helped his aide by giving Rs 10 lakh for his liver treatment, neglected his own ailment. Mani's death was due to liver cirrhosis. His liver used to break and often required banding of nerves in the neck. Although he vomited blood, he did not stop consumption of beer. He drank beer on March 5, 4 and 3. Although beer contains only a small amount of methyl alcohol, the higher the consumption, the higher the methyl alcohol content in the body, said the officer.
