If the official figures are to be believed, more than 10,000 people have been killed in the ongoing Israeli attack on Gaza. However, the real number of causalities in the war is feared to be double the numbers projected by the officials. Among all sections, it was children and women who bore the gruesome brunt of the calamity and are still being haunted by the interminable attacks.

Even hospitals were not spared from airstrikes. It even invited wrath from allies of Israel. From the beginning of the war, India held their stance of unwavering support to Israel and the country also termed Hamas as a terrorist entity. However, the external affairs ministry recently advocated for Palestine's right to have an independent state, only after persistent criticism from opposition parties in India, that voiced for Palestine.

It should be understood from their actions that Israel has taken the support received from many countries of the world, including India, as a license to carry out more aggressive attacks and accelerate the displacement of Palestinians.

Israel continues to settle its own citizens in the occupied Palestinian territories. They are also establishing Jewish colonies to acquire the Syrian Golan Heights as well. The UN resolution condemning this was supported by 145 countries including India. Countries like China, Russia, France and Britain also supported the resolution. Only seven countries, including the United States, opposed the resolution. The resolution was brought by the Special Political and Decolonization Committee of the UN General Assembly. The UN resolution demanded an immediate stop to the seizure of land in the occupied territories, the displacement of the people there, and the establishment of Jewish settlements.

Meanwhile, India’s sudden U-turn confused many geopolitical analysts, since the country under PM Modi was always unrelenting in their support for Israel. Meanwhile, the US demanded that a ceasefire be declared in Gaza and that humanitarian aid be delivered there. India abstained from participating in the vote on the resolution presented in the General Assembly last week.

It is to be seen how Israel will react to the UN order asking them to stop settlements in occupied Palestine. Israel has not relinquished most of the land it occupied in the war. Despite this war, the attempt to settle the Jews in the areas where the Palestinians were displaced indicates Israel’s ruthless game plan to settle the war once and for all. The UN decision will meet its real purpose only when it gets implemented. The UN officials should walk the talk.
