NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has dropped the term 'sex worker' from its handbook. The apex court amended the handbook of legal terminology in response to the demand of NGOs working against human trafficking.

In a letter to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, the organizations had pointed out that the term 'sex worker' implies that the women chose it of their own free will. However, women are brought to this by using force and trickery.

In August, the Supreme Court had issued a handbook changing the words used in relation to women and sexual minorities. The term 'sex worker' was added in the handbook instead of words such as prostitute. However, the organizations demanded that this should not be used either.

Words that were included instead
1. Trafficked survivor
2. Woman engaged in commercial sexual activity
3. Woman forced into commercial sexual exploitation
