THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rahul Mamkootathil has been elected as the state president of the Youth Congress. Rahul got elected to the post of president by securing 2,21,986 votes in the organization elections held two months ago. Currently, he is the Youth General Secretary and a member of KPCC. Abin Varkey came second by securing 1,68,588 votes.
10 people, including Abin and Aritha Babu, will be vice presidents. Rahul Mamkootathil said that he was very happy with the election results.
"The only thing that makes me sad is the fact that Oommen Chandy sir is not here with us today to know the result. Had he been with us, today would have been a joyous day. I would like to express my gratitude to all Youth Congress workers," Rahul said.
A total of 7,29,626 votes had been polled in the organisational election. 2,16,462 votes were invalid. Rahul Mamkootathil was a Group A candidate. He was named the candidate after long discussions. Abin Varkey was a Group I candidate. KC Venugopal group had withdrawn its candidate after announcing its support for Abin Varkey.
