NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said making deepfake videos after misusing artificial intelligence is creating a big concern in the country. He said that he has asked the ChatGpt team to flag deepfakes and issue a warning when such videos are circulated on the internet. He added that during the times of artificial intelligence, it is important that technology should be used responsibly, he added.
Addressing the media at BJP’s Diwali Milan programme at the party’s headquarters in Delhi, he asked the media to educate people about the issue.
Modi's remarks come after deepfake videos with morphed faces of actors Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif and Kajol surfaced on social media. This caused a great crisis. Many celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan from the film industry had come forward with their reactions.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had issued a new advisory to social media platforms last week. Had informed that fines will be levied for creating and spreading such deepfake videos.
Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that online platforms have a legal obligation to prevent the spread of such false information. He said that the deepfake videos have been removed within the last 36 hours and action will be taken quickly as per IT Act. He added that the government is committed to ensure adequate security and trust for the people in the digital sector.
The Center has announced that individuals who create and disseminate deepfake videos will be fined Rs 1 lakh and imprisoned for three years.
