NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi warns that deep fake videos created using artificial intelligence are a huge threat to the country.
Modi spoke about the danger of deep fake in the background of his own fake video circulating after popular actresses like Rashmika Mandana, Kajal, Katrina Kaif and various political leaders.
Deepfake videos created with malicious intent to promote fake propaganda can ignite the flames of hatred in a diverse society like India. He also said that the media should take the initiative to educate the people against this menace.
Modi was speaking at the Diwali Milan program at the BJP headquarters. The Prime Minister also mentioned the danger of deep fakes at the virtual summit of Global South countries yesterday. He also suggested that chat GPT content include a warning against deep fakes that are spreading rapidly through social media.
Fake videos overtaking the originals is a crisis. A society that is unable to examine the reality themselves, will believe it without knowing whether it is real or fake. There is concern about the effects it may have on society.

I saw a fake video of me doing the Garba dance, an art form of Gujarat. I used to dance garba during my school days and haven't done it since. Someone has just made a deepfake video. Modi said with a smile that those who love him are forwarding the video.
The dancer in the Modi fake video is Vikas Mahante, a Mumbai native and actor who looks like Modi. A video of Vikas dancing during Diwali celebrations in London was converted into Modi's dance by artificial intelligence. This video went viral.
