THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Construction of the first phase of Vizhinjam International Port, a flagship project for the state is progressing rapidly. Approximately 60% of this phase slated for completion by May 2024, is already done.

An 800-meter berth is set to be established in this initial phase with 400 meters completed and the remaining 400 expected to be finished by January. Furthermore, work on the embankment measuring 3000 meters in total has restarted. Currently, 2345 meters of the embankment have been completed.

The final stages of construction are underway for all the buildings at the port. Simultaneously, Adani Group is actively engaging with international shipping companies, particularly the Geneva-based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). MSC, operating in 155 countries with a fleet of 740 vessels, is in talks with Adani Group. Their presence at Vizhinjam would mark a significant leap in the port's growth.

Considering its role in container handling, cranes stand as vital equipment at the port. The first phase necessitates 32 cranes, comprising eight ship-to-shore cranes and 24-yard cranes. Presently, two ship-to-shore cranes and two-yard cranes have arrived via two ships. The upcoming third shipment, due on the 27th of this month, will bring six-yard cranes. Subsequently, the fourth shipment, scheduled for December 15, will deliver two ship-to-shore cranes and three-yard cranes.

The construction plan includes three phases for a 2000-meter-long berth. Additional cranes will be essential once the remaining berth construction is finished.
