KOZHIKODE: The cabinet has approved BPCL's compressed biogas plant, which will be a permanent solution to the bio-waste problem in Kochi city. The project was approved by the cabinet meeting held in Thalassery during the Navakerala Sadas tour. 10 acres of land in Brahmapuram owned by Kochi Corporation will be handed over to BPCL for this purpose. On this land, BPCL will set up a plant with a capacity to process 150 metric tonnes of waste per day.
The compressed biogas produced from the plant will be used by BPCL. The construction cost is around Rs 150 crore. This amount will be fully borne by BPCL. Water and electricity required for construction of the plant will be provided at low cost. The project will be completed within 15 months.
The organic fertilizer produced in the plant will be made available to the farmers. Wastewater generated as part of waste management is treated and only clean water is released. The remaining inorganic waste after processing will be taken over by Clean Kerala Company and disposed of. It is hoped that the compressed biogas plant will solve the organic waste problem in Kochi Corporation, which has a population of nearly seven lakh and more than 1,61,000 households.
