KOLKATA: At last, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee dropped the silence and talked in favour of the usual termagant MP from Krishnanagar Mahua Moitra. Banerjee doubted serious smear campaigns running behind the veil to oust Mahua from the parliament. The CM said this issue would only help Mahua win the elections more easily than before. The WB chief minister was talking at an event in Kolkata when she dedicated some time to mention the predicament clouding Mahua Moitra.
Mahua is facing legal action for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2 crore from businessman Darshan Hiranandani to raise questions in Parliament. The BJP has criticized the Trinamool Congress for not responding to the issue.
Despite the controversy, Mahua was appointed as the district chief of the party in Krishnanagar. Meanwhile, Mahua also came forward to express her gratitude for Mamata's response. 'Thank you to Mamata Banerjee and the party. Thank you for making me the district head of the party in Krishnanagar, I will work for the people' Mahua wrote in the social media post.
Trinamool leader and National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee also came out in support of Mahua. On the 9th of this month, he also addressed Mahua as a 'victim of BJP’s hate politics'. Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien also responded that an appropriate decision will be taken after the controversies facing Mahua.
On November 9, the Ethics Committee had recommended the expulsion of Mahua Moitra from the Lok Sabha. Then the committee report was handed over to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Amidst this, rumours ran rife about West Bengal CM and her party ilks getting tired of Mahua’s antics and there were also controversies about protests from the people of Krishnagaar about the MP's lack of attention to their queries.
