THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Police have made a recommendation to the government to increase vigilance at Sabarimala and build a helipad for emergency evacuation. This follows a security assessment in the wake of recent violence and terrorist threats.
"Anticipating the threat of terrorism and emergency situation, a model code of conduct should be made. Terrorist organizations and Maoist groups may enter Sabarimala in the guise of pilgrims. If Irumudikattu has to be examined, it should be done without hurting the believers and without violating customs. Discarded materials should be handled with care. Many terrorist groups have the capability to operate improvised explosive devices (IEDs) using remote control. Care should also be taken that such items may be smuggled in among the offerings.", the proposal reads.
Other recommendations:- 30 to 130 LPG cylinders are kept in hotels in Sannidhanam. The Devaswom Board should take over the distribution of LPG by controlling this. A centralized storage facility is required for cylinders. A reservation system should be introduced for Makarajyothi and Mandalapuja occasions. Alternative means should be found to evacuate large numbers of people from Sannidhanam. A ropeway system is needed to transport the goods from Pampa to Sannidhanam. There should be more open space in Sannidhanam to control overcrowding.
