NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday said that the accused in ED cases cannot be jailed indefinitely without a trial.
The court's observation was while granting bail to the Delhi liquor policy case accused and employee of Pernod Ricard, Binoy Babu. The said Binoy Babu was imprisoned for 13 months without even being read the charge sheet. A bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna observed that this was not appropriate. It was also pointed out that there are inconsistencies in the allegations leveled by ED and CBI against the accused. Binoy is alleged to be involved in financial transactions related to liquor policy.
ED opposed the bail plea. Binoy was arrested in November 2022. The accused was granted bail in a case filed by CBI.
