THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: 1275 families will be rehabilitated as part of the West Coast Road from Kovalam to Bekal. The families in the area from Kovalam to Varkala will be rehabilitated in this way. The government will spend Rs 247.2 crores for this. The amount will be found through KIIFB. 1470 families are to be rehabilitated in the entire district. Out of this 1275 family members are in Kovalam and Varkala area. A total of 427 crore rupees has been allocated for the implementation of the project in the district.

Rs 10 lakhs is estimated per family, which will amount to Rs 14.8 crore in total including rent and other expenses. Rs 19.5 lakhs will be set aside for 39 shops in this area. Rs 79.57 crore is estimated to be the value of the buildings. In Varkala, under Punargeham project, 6 crore rupees have been allocated to the fisheries department for the rehabilitation of 60 fishermen families. An estimate of 7.63 crores has been prepared for this. Rehabilitation will be carried out by the Kerala Nirmithi Kendra. Rs. 5000 will be allowed as rent for six months until providing compensation for the acquired land. The people living on the banks of the Varkala, TS Canal and Vettoor Gram Panchayat will be rehabilitated through the Life Mission project.

942 families have to be rehabilitated within 10 km between Kovalam and Akkulam and 116 families within two km in Puthanthope.
