THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: His eloquent speeches and profound ideas drew attention leading several organized student movements. Transitioning to the leadership of AIYF in the mid-80s, Vishwam was earmarked by senior leaders as a future stalwart of leftist politics in Kerala. His rise within CPI to the National Executive Member position validated their belief.
Even today, the resounding chant of 'Job or Jail', a rallying cry adopted by Kerala's youth irrespective of party affiliations remains vivid. This slogan stemmed from the struggle voiced against rampant unemployment plaguing educated youth. A historic event unfolded when two marches spearheaded by SF State President Benoy Vishwath converged in Thiruvananthapuram, only for the youth to face arrest and imprisonment.
The demand for entrance examinations in medical and higher education including engineering stemmed from the fierce activism of SFI and AISF against exam malpractices. The stain on Kerala's education sector due to connivance in medical admissions and altering marks, prompted protests. Vishwam and his comrades faced police brutality at Kerala University during these demonstrations.
Rare are the politicians who show genuine concern for the environment. Benoy Vishwam stands out for his numerous interventions in environmental protection. His appointment as a minister in 2006 by VS Achuthanandan saw him take charge of the forest department out of his deep-rooted love for nature. Notably, Vishwam once engaged in a heated argument as a minister confronting tree-cutters in Sasthamangalam.
