OTTAWA: Canadian government has revised its visa rules posing challenges for aspiring international students eyeing Canada as their study destination. The Ministry of Immigration has doubled the required amount for living expenses for student visa applicants now demanding proof of having 20,635 Canadian dollars (over Rs 17 lakhs) in addition to tuition fees.
Previously, students needed to show a deposit of ten thousand Canadian dollars. The government's rationale for this increase is to ensure students' welfare, stating that those arriving with only ten thousand dollars struggle financially once in Canada.
Experts note a 'reverse immigration trend' due to this policy change. Approximately 42,000 people returned from Canada in the initial six months of this year significantly higher than the numbers in the preceding years (93,818 in 2022 and 85,927 in 2021).
International students contribute socially and economically to Canada but the increased cost of living requirements reflects the real expenses they face. Immigration Minister Mark Miller emphasized that the reforms aim to safeguard students from economic vulnerability and exploitation intending to provide adequate housing facilities for their success in Canada.
The government's move, while intending to protect international students has led to a surge in departures, impacting the influx of aspiring learners into the country.
