governor-

The protests against state governor Arif Mohammad Khan, who left the Raj Bhavan for the airport on Monday evening, was an act that crossed all boundaries. No governor in the history of the state has faced such a protest before. SFI workers stopped his vehicle at three places in the city and demonstrated violence. In the third incident, the manner in which the governor got out of his vehicle and confronted the protesters and the police in the middle of the road was also unprecedented.

It is not at all desirable that the governor, who is the constitutional head of the state, has to cross protesters on the way to reach his destination. Everyone has the right to protest against anyone, even against the governor. At the same time, the security of a person holding a high position like the governor should never have been compromised. When the ruling party youth organization activists stopped the governor's vehicle by jumping in front of it and resorted to violence in protest of the governor, the police could only watch, not knowing what to do.

This is definitely a big failure on the part of the security personnel. Even though there were indications that the protesters would take to the road against the governor, the police could not stop it or arrange a safe journey. The reason for the SFI outrage is said to be the unilateral appointment of members to the Kerala University Senate by the Governor. However, it is clear that there are many other things and not just this reason exclusively. Not only on Monday but even before that, youth organizations had come out to protest against the governor by showing black flags.

The worsening political situation in the state is not bright at all. A careful observer will realize that the ongoing agitation and protests against the government's Navakerala Sadas is what led to the violence against the Governor on the other side. Recently, KSU activists threw shoes at the bus carrying the Chief Minister and ministers. Not only the police but also the youth organizations of the ruling party are waiting all prepared to confront those who wave black flags when the convoy passes.

They confront the protestors physically. With accusations and counter-accusations and challenges, the social atmosphere is becoming more and more murky day by day. These are all sickening sights to those who want to see peace and tranquillity prevailing in the state. The state has never accepted political activity that leads to division of the society. Although the KSU leaders had announced that they would stage a statewide protest against the Navakerala bus by throwing shoes, Congress leaders intervened and dissuaded them from that move, which was the right thing to do.

When party cadres and youth workers indulge in unsavoury acts from impulsiveness, it is the senior leaders who have to stop and control them in real-time. That is what society expects from them. The stance that if you turn against the Chief Minister and others, we will go on the road against the Governor, is not at all suited for the youth organizations belonging to the ruling parties. It is the responsibility of those at the helm to correct them. When the police force is there to maintain law and order, that duty should not be left to the party workers.
