KOZHIKODE: After deciding on a long trip to Gujarat’s Somnath temple, Aparna nonchalantly informed her husband about her mode of transportation — a cycle. Getting a yes nod from her husband, Aparna peddled for 28 days covering 2000 km to reach her destination. She left Kozhikode on the 12th of November and last Sunday witnessed the intricate architectural beauty of Somnath temple.

Aparna is the wife of Vinod, the owner of the Crown Theater in Kozhikode. Vinod and his sons Ram and Dev will arrive today by train in Gujarat. The family will return together by train. Aparna's cycle ride was intended to create awareness about nature-friendly modes of travel.

Aparna crossed the Kerala border via Kasaragod. Later, she crossed the border of Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat with ease. Throughout her journey, she explored local cuisines, regaled in the countryland, and saw unknown rural terrains. Even on occasions when Google Maps showed errors, it was the locals who helped her get on the right track. Cycling clubs from various states also came to her help.

Once, Aprana took shelter in the famous Kunkeshwar temple in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri after the place got hit by a cyclone. The traffic police in Maharashtra did their part and helped her escape the busy traffic. The enchanting beaches of Gokarna also opened new doors of exploration for Aparna.

Most of the journey was through coastal areas. Due to following Vrat( fasting), Aparna savoured only vegetarian dishes while on her sojourn. It still brings a strong craving in her to get the sumptuous Gujarathi Thelpa which she added to her list of favourites. Meanwhile, she also took part in the Goa film festival.

Aparna hails from Kozhikode and has been fond of cycling since childhood. She now lives in Kattappana.
