NEW DELHI: In a major security breach on the anniversary of the Parliament attack, two unidentified men entered the Lok Sabha and opened a canister emitting yellow smoke. The incident took place today at 1 pm. Television footage shows a man and woman jumping from between the desks of the MPs. The duo jumped from the visitors' gallery. They were immediately taken out by the security personnel.
From the CCTV footage, it is understood that a man wearing a dark blue shirt jumped into the chamber first. At the same time, the second person opened a canister that emitted smoke. A pass issued by a BJP MP was also seized from one of the trespassers. The pass was obtained from the office of BJP MP Pratap Sinha.
At first, it was thought that someone might have fallen from the visitor's gallery. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram responded that it was only later that he realized that there had been a security breach and initially thought that someone had fallen from the gallery.
"Zero Hour was on and I was waiting for my turn to speak. Suddenly one person jumped from the visitors' gallery. Initially, it appeared as if he had leaned over and fallen down, that was my initial reaction. This was followed by another person jumping and then I realised that this was a deliberate act. One person started running towards the Speaker's chair," Chidambaram said.
