THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The new price of subsidized goods in Supplyco is likely to increase twofold in the coming days. The new price will be fixed by reducing the subsidy by 25 per cent from the public market price. Almost 13 items in Supplyco are being still sold at the prices that were fixed back in 2016. The issue of increasing the number of subsidized goods from 13 to 16 is also under consideration, taking into account the public sentiments.

The expert committee appointed by the government may submit its report this week. The committees showed concern about Supplyco’s survival if the sale is carried out at the current price,

The committee chaired by Dr. Raviraman, a member of the Planning Board, was appointed to increase the price of subsidized goods and submit necessary proposals for the growth of the institution. The report also suggested that Supplyco should open more supermarkets to increase revenue. Civil Supplies Commissioner Dr Sajith Babu and Supplyco CMD Sriram Venkataraman are members of the committee.

Chilli will see the biggest price hike. Currently, the average price of chillies is Rs 250. Peanuts sold at Rs 43 may fetch up to Rs 135. Wheat prices will skyrocket from Rs 66 to Rs 100-105.
