KARUNAGAPPALLI: The court has rejected the bail plea of Manjumol Thomas, a private higher secondary teacher who was arrested for brutally torturing her 80-year-old mother-in-law. Manjumol, who was remanded for 14 days, has been shifted to the Women's Prison & Correctional Home in Attakulangara.
It was the Thekkumbhagam police who arrested Manjumol the other day. A video of Manjumol brutally torturing her mother-in-law Eliyamma (80) had circulated on social media yesterday. The police took action following this.
Manjumol used to torture her mother-in-law in front of her children. Upon noticing that Manjumol was constantly torturing the elderly woman, locals informed the panchayat president and police about the matter. Following this, Eliyamma was shifted to the house of a relative for four days. Later, Eliyamma was brought back to the house after giving counselling to Manjumol. However, there was no change in Manjumol's behaviour towards her mother-in-law.
Last Wednesday, Manju had brutally attacked Eliyamma with an iron rod. Only the two were present at the house at the time of the incident. When Eliyamma's son James reached the house, he saw his mother lying unwell. Following this, he rushed his mother to the hospital and then lodged a complaint with the Thekkumbhagam police against Manju. After recording the statement of Eliyamma, police arrested Manju by Thursday evening.
