THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Dr R Bindu, Minister for Higher Education and Social Justice has directed an investigation into the incident involving the assault of an 80-year-old amnesiac woman named Eliyamma Varghese. The victim was assaulted by her son's wife Manjumol who is a teacher within her own residence in Thevalakkara, Kollam.

The Kollam District Social Justice Officer is set to visit the site directly and conduct a thorough investigation with a subsequent report to be submitted.

Dr Bindu stated that any form of violence against the elderly will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The minister has also instructed necessary measures to ensure Eliyamma's adequate protection access to legal assistance and directed that a copy of the report be forwarded to the relevant maintenance tribunal for further action.

Concurrently, the court has denied bail to Manjumol following her plea citing the need to care for her children. Consequently, she has been remanded to Attakkulangara Jail for a period of fourteen days. Manjumol was taken into custody after a video capturing the assault from a year ago went viral.
