THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is a drastic weather change in Kerala as it can rain here at any moment and in any month. Seas can turn rogue at any time and summers can also be extreme.
These warnings are in the report prepared by IPCC (International Protocols of Climate Change) based on various studies of the world.
The weather has been changing for some time now. This change will be drastic. Ten years from now, the climate will not be the same as now. The studies of the Cochin University of Science and Technology also underline that the current frequent rains and the sudden rise in atmospheric temperature are in line with this.
The main cause of climate change is the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. A safe level is 300 ppm (parts per million). It has now increased to 412. As carbon dioxide increases, the temperature increases. When more carbon dioxide is added to water bodies, the pH value of the water decreases and acidity increases. Oxygen will decrease. Methane gas and nitrous oxide from the sea will mix in the atmosphere. The CUSAT study shows that this is ten times worse than the increase in carbon dioxide.
The studies were conducted by Dr Abhilash, Dr Bijoy Nandan and Dr Shaju SS of CUSAT.
Cyclones in the Arabian Sea used to be nominal. It is now a situation where a cyclone can form at any time. It was also clear from the Gorakhpapur IIT study that this is due to sea changes.
As the climate changes, so will the farming practices. The climate change in Kerala is a part of the change in the whole world. This will not only affect the agriculture here but also the tourism which has a lot of income.
Wetland conservation is important
Conservation of wetland ecosystems is important as they keep carbon sequestered. Ways like reducing the use of coal, increasing solar energy, and devices that reduce the use of electricity are essential to protect the environment. Next year's Climate Summit (COPE) in the UAE will discuss ways to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
