GAZIPUR: The man who was shot by the police in an encounter on suspicion of transporting cattle in a pick-up van died in hospital. Sunil Ram, a native of Bihar, died in a hospital in Varanasi. He was arrested by Dildarnagar police last Wednesday.

Poilce said that Sunil Ram was nabbed while transporting five cattle to Bihar in a pickup truck on Wednesday night. Dildar Nagar police arrested Kumar but the two accomplices escaped. When the raiding team was busy completing the procedures after rescuing the animals, Sunil took out a country pistol hidden in the house and threatened the police. In his attempt to escape, he open fired at the police. The police returned fire resulting in Sunil's leg injury. According to the police, he was released in judicial custody on Thursday after receiving preliminary medical aid.

During his stay in jail, his health deteriorated and he was admitted to a hospital in Varanasi. SHO Pawan Kumar Upadhyay informed that after the post-mortem process, his body was handed over to his relatives.

SP Omveer Singh said further action will be taken after receiving the post-mortem report. He said that the post-mortem report is awaited.
