THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governor Arif Muhammad Khan defied security advice and engaged with locals at Kozhikode's Mittayitheruvu sparking tensions with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's government.
The standoff intensified after Governor Khan, rejecting security measures, interacted with crowds directly, challenging the government's authority. CM Vijayan openly expressed discontent hinting at seeking the central government's intervention to recall the governor.
This face-off emerged following the SFI protest leading to a contentious situation after a recent cabinet reshuffle and budget meeting. Despite the Supreme Court's affirmation of the Chancellor's authority, the government and SFI remain steadfast against the governor's actions veiled under his official capacity.
Tensions flared when SFI protest banners against the governor were removed by the police at Calicut University, only to reappear shortly after sparking widespread demonstrations. Governor Khan irked by this declared his intention to visit the streets challenging security protocol.
Disregarding security concerns, the governor traversed Mittayitheruvu emphasizing the region's hospitality, and engaging with locals, traders, and schoolchildren. The police presence heightened amid the governor's spontaneous visit causing increased tension.
During his nine-and-a-half-hour visit, Governor Khan interacted with locals tasted halwa from shops, purchased items, took selfies and engaged with BJP leaders. Notably, the protest remained absent during his presence although later CPM and DYFI protests erupted post his departure.
Governor Khan's actions drew severe criticism from CM Vijayan accusing him of provocation and disrupting Kerala's peaceful environment. Allegations flew as the Chief Minister blamed the Governor for causing unrest and interfering with the Kerala Police's functioning.
