CAIRO: Egypt’s incumbent president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was successfully elected again as the president of the country for the third term, this time securing 89.6% of the votes. Sisi’s commanding win came at a time when reports show how the top leader of Egypt has curtailed dissenting voices, and not allowed opposition to contest elections against him.

All the three other candidates who fought elections were not highly popular figures. Meanwhile, some high-profile candidates who turned up to be contenders for the presidential spot were jailed by Sisi with zero regard for human rights.

In 2019, through a constitutional amendment, Sisi had increased the term of the president to six years. Meanwhile, Indian PM Modi extended his congratulations to Sisi and talked optimistically about deepening India-Egypt Strategic Partnership.
