BEIJING: A major earthquake rattled northwest China killing nearly 111 people and injuring many, reported Chinese official media. Many buildings collapsed in the earthquake. The earthquake struck at 11.59 pm local time (Monday) in Gansu province.
Immediately after the tremor, many ran from their houses to the streets for their lives. Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that the rescue operation is progressing at its fastest pace. A magnitude of 6.0 was recorded by the US Geological Survey. In addition to Gansu, tremors were also felt in Lanzhou, Qinghai and Haidong.
Electricity and water supply have been interrupted in all the earthquake-affected areas. Xinhua reported that the rescue operation is extremely difficult due to the snow. The only means of light are flashlights and torches in vehicles.
Earthquakes are not unusual for China. In August, 23 people lost their lives in an earthquake in eastern China. More than 100 people died in the violent movement in the Sichuan region in September.
