governor-government-fight

It is one of the paramount duties of Governors having charge of the state to sign crucial bills. Bills passed by the legislature must be signed by the governor to become law and it is a constitutional duty nevertheless. And to make it more lucid, the Governor is not allowed to make new laws for the state to follow.

The basis of democracy is that the representatives elected by the people make the law. If there is doubt about a bill passed by the legislature, the governor can send it back. However, the practice of not sending back the files is a bid to delay the process, and it is unabashedly detrimental.

In Kerala, the Governor agreed to put ink on the bills only after the government approached the Supreme Court. Things have made such a pitfall that the Governor-Government tussle has turned into a daily affair in the state. The governor on the other hand will never leave any opportunity to blame the CM and the rebuttal from the CPM leader will be also on the same line adding to the worry.

The Chief Minister has recently said that he will ask the Center to recall the Governor. The Governor meanwhile accused the Chief Minister of deputing SFI workers to physically harm him. The small tussle quickly morphed into a street battle after SFI workers ambushed the Governor’s convoy paving the way for dramatic scenes to take place in Thiruvananthapuram’s Pettah. On the other hand, there are also accusations about the biased attitude shown by police forces.

If any lapse in security is detected, the Governor can oust any police officer at a whim. The governor even showed that he is empowered with the authority to order an SP-ranked police officer to unfurl the banner that vilified him at Calicut University. However, SFI said they won’t back away from the protest. The police handling of the youth congress protest was nothing short of brute, however, the same cannot be meted out to SFI considering political repercussions.

The Governor is continuing his verbal attack on CPM saying the ‘Nava Kerala Sadas’ is a posh event that is ‘illogical’. He later called SFI workers 'criminals'. And on Monday, when the tussle was at its summit, the Governor decided to break his security protocol and walked free through Kozhikode’s Mittayi Theruvu, tasting wheat Halwa, fondling toddlers and embracing the shopkeepers, the Governor won many hearts and arguably ousted NKS event from news headlines on Monday. This visit was viewed with suspicion by many as it felt like the governor was trying to establish that he had people's support with him as a license to further criticise the government. This show of strength did not bode well with CPM and the tussle will turn more horrible in the coming days.
