THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The construction of five railway flyovers will begin soon as part of the government mission to make the state ‘Level cross free’. The Public Works Department has sanctioned Rs 51 crore for this project. It will be located in Edakulangara, Polayathodu (Kollam), Kothanalloor (Kottayam), Vellayil (Kozhikode) and Makkoottam (Kannur).

A memorandum of understanding was signed between the state government and the railway ministry for the construction of railway flyovers in 2021. K-Rail was commissioned for construction. The construction cost will be borne equally by the state government and the railways. As per the concept, a total of 27 railway flyovers will be constructed.

Rs 27 crore was earlier sanctioned for the site acquisition for the construction of six flyovers. This is for flyovers at Kannapuram, Cherukunnu, Muzhappilangad Beach (Kannur), Attur, Ollur (Thrissur) and Azhoor (Thiruvananthapuram).

Palli,Painkulam (Thrissur), Thrippakudam, Kakkanad (Alappuzha), Pattikad, Cherukara, Chiramangalam, Nilambur Yard (Malappuram), Ezhimala, Kannur South, Pannenpara (Kannur), South Thrikaripur, Uppala, Olavara (Kasaragod), Manakkara (Palakkad) , and Tamarakulam (Kollam-Alappuzha).

A total of 99 flyovers will be constructed in different phases in the state. 72 of these are being constructed by the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation under the Public Works Department at the expense of KIFB funds. Construction of 10 flyovers is in progress. Of these, the flyovers at Kanhangad, Farook and Guruvayur have been completed.
